Be a True Professional in Your Home Business

Business people planing

Do you know what it will take to get your business off the ground running?

Do you know what it will take to get people to look at your business as a professional one?

Starting a successful home business can be challenging, but armed with hard work, determination, passion and the knowledge to make it a success will increase your chances of survival.  Here are some tips that you should follow from the moment you open for business:

Right from the start, you will want to show your passion and engage as a professional.  Your professional image will be judged by others from the moment you open your doors.  Communication, as you might have guessed, will play a major role in your success.  Being courteous and respectful to clients, associates, suppliers and all other people you have business dealings with will be essential.

Many times new home business owners are so wound up in their passion for what they are doing that they get carried away.  This is your warning to be careful. It can be so easy to over extend yourself, or to say you can do something even if you are not really sure you can. No matter what, be honest.  Never misrepresent what you are capable of doing.  Always be realistic when speaking with clients and be certain, before you commit to a project, that you truly can get the job done within the client’s specifications.  This shows true professionalism.

Always do your best to deliver to your customers or clients more than what they are expecting.  Give every project your full attention and complete it above and beyond their expectations. This will help to keep your clients coming back for more. In the words of George Faddoul: always underpromise and try to over deliver.

Always ask for feedback.  Find out what your clients like best about your work and where they think you can improve in the future.  There is always room for improvement and letting the customer know that you are willing to take their ideas and improve upon them shows true character and professionalism.

If a customer is ever less than satisfied, do what you can to make it right.  If you cannot make it right, you should seriously consider giving a refund.  Now it is important to note that some clients will never be satisfied completely, no matter what you do.  That is just the nature of being in business.  Try to determine what the situation is and what will best suit you and your client.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, make sure you always have a positive attitude and that you present yourself with confidence.  Clients will be quick to judge you based on how you present yourself.  If you give off vibes that you are unsure of yourself or display a negative attitude potential clients will be weary of using you.  Feeling good about your abilities is essential and professional and you should most certainly let it show.

You can improve your self image and confidence through continuous personal development activities.  Growing personally will help you more effectively grow your business.

  • Hi Johanna,
Wow! You covered just about every great and important tip I can think of with regard to owning your own business. I believe you are correct that sometimes, in the beginning, business owners can get a little too excited and promise things that they are not sure how to deliver upon ~ it’s not intention, yet it does happen. The best thing to always do is to be upfront & honest with your clients and if you do not know an answer to something, either find out for them (and tell them this is what you’re doing), or help them connect with someone who does have the answer for them. Believe me, that is what they are seeking & next time they need assistance with something, I’d be surprised if they don’t think of you first! ;-) Christine

  • Johanna,

Great info! I think the one key area you mentioned more than once is confidence. Without having confidence in our products and services we are kind of saying “well I don’t really know if it is any good, but would you like to try it?”

It is unfortunate that the MLM industry catches such a bad wrap sometimes, if people would focus more on their products because they truly do love them and less time on the ra ra ra of lets get more distributors the potential and easy of growth would sky rocket.

Thanks for the tips. Have a great day!

    Joe

  • Johanna, this is a great post! So many people just get excited and go out there not having a clue about how to do it, much less do it in a way where they will be respected and taken seriously. We think a lot alike! I have always, under-promised and over-delivered. It works great!

Another valuable tip you give it not to over-extend yourself. This was one of my problems. I wanted so much to help and assist that would end up saying “yes” to too many things at once! Being careful is excellent advice! A new business person has to know themselves and always be honest – with themselves, and with their clients or customers!

Thanks so much for putting this valuable answer out there!

  • Johanna,
You’ve listed some very good points for anyone to consider before venturing into the business world. The customer/client drives your business, so taking care of them first and foremost is so important.
    Thanks for the reminders,
    Val :)

  • These are even great points for job seekers. I was speaking with a girlfriend the other day. She had failed an interview…she had the experience and qualifications that they wanted…the employer actually wanted to hire her pre interview. She undersold herself in the interview process by not having a strong self confidence. That was feed back from the employer.
I guess we are always marketing ourselves whether we are aware of it or not.
