How to Outsource Some of Your Business Needs

If you have your own business and it is successful, you could find yourself working from sunup to sundown every day, or even longer.

This may leave you feeling drained and unable to concentrate on the important aspects of your business full time.  One solution you may want to seriously consider is outsourcing

Outsourcing has become quite popular and allows businesses the opportunity to grow and expand at a quicker rate.  The great news is that with the use of the internet, outsourcing is easier than ever before.  Here are some tips to help you get started:

Your first step will be to develop a game plan and a budget to work with

Look at what you are currently doing that could be outsourced to free up your time to concentrate on critical business components.  Outsource tasks that are not in your area of expertise and could be completed much more efficiently from someone who is familiar with that area.  Depending on the nature of your business you could outsource a variety of tasks including internet and web design, advertising, SEO, accounting and even finding a virtual assistant to complete basic tasks may be helpful.  Take a look at your budget and decide how much you can pay for each of the items on your outsourcing list.

Before you begin to hire, you will want to very carefully research and decide who to hire

There are numerous internet resources available to assist in finding the perfect person for the job, but be careful.  Don’t make the mistake of hiring the lowest bidder or the first company or individual you hear from.  Be sure to ask for references, work examples when applicable and anything else that may be pertinent to the job they will be undertaking for you.  You may want to even offer a trial project (that you pay for) to see if the person or company will be a good fit for your business.

Once you have decided who to hire, make sure that you are clear on what you expectations are.  Be certain that the person you are hiring understands the job to be done and any deadlines that must be met. Make sure they also know the quality of work that you expect.

A final tip is to always remember to start slow

Don’t just wake up one morning and decide to outsource every task that you don’t want to do any more.  Although it can be tempting to do this, it is better to test the waters, so to speak.  After you have developed your plan, you should start with the tasks you have most difficulty with or that take up the majority of your time.

Pick one to begin with and outsource it.  Once you have found an individual or a company that can do the job to your satisfaction, you can then slowly begin to outsource other items on your list.  This tip is critical.   If you outsource several things at once and for one reason or another none of them get done to your satisfaction you will be scrambling to re-do them.

  • Johanna,

Thanks for this great advice. Outsourcing is something that I have yet to try in my business, but it just makes so much sense! As you share, there seems to be an unlimited number of tasks that we as internet marketers need to attend to on a daily basis. It often becomes difficult to create balance in our lives as a result.

Outsourcing is a great solution to creating balance, freeing ourselves from tasks that we do not enjoy, and getting expert help on tasks that we may not excel at.

  • Hey Johanna,

Some great suggestions about outsourcing! I haven’t got to that point in my business yet, but what you say makes great sense. I like the idea of a trial period to see if you both ‘gel’ together!

    Thanks for the tips Johanna!

Thanks for this article. As an independent social media manager, I see so many people who want to outsource their social media marketing, but really have no idea what they want the manager to do, how much time needs to be allocated, or what is actually involved. This means they rely on the potential contractor to tell them what to outsource. Then if things go awry, due to their lack of understanding, it’s always the contractor’s fault.

It’s great to see someone helping the small business owner be more confident and efficient in how to contract for outsourced services.

Keep up the great job. BTW, I like the look and feel of your blog; very sleek.

    Hi Gary,

yes that is not an easy task. I try to oursource tasks that are repetitive and also tasks that I am not so good at or I don’t enjoy all that much. And you are right sometimes it takes initially more time to outsource than doing it yourself. However in the long run you are much better off.

    Thanks for dropping by
