As the owner of a home health business it is imperative to find and grow a network of people who can provide you with support and in some cases guidance.  Home based businesses are a great way to follow your passion while building a profitable business.  Without the “traditional” work place relationships, it is vital to establish similar relationships in order for your business to thrive.

Starting a home health business can make you feel slightly alienated from your peers in the health industry.  I have a passion for this business and knew if I wanted to succeed I would have to surround myself with peers that can understand and relate to my passion.  For this reason it is imperative you get out there (the Internet) and develop new relationships with other who like you have a passion for the health industry.  One of the first things I did to find other like minded individuals was to search the Internet for groups of people like myself.  You can do this by finding and joining forums where people in your industry gather.  Using your favorite search engine, enter keywords such as business from home, home health business, forums, etc.  This should result in a list of websites that host forums where you can meet others in your field.  By joining these forums you will be able to ask questions, share ideas, discuss relevant issues and get to know others who have home based businesses in the health industry.  Having this group of individuals can provide a great support system which is needed for your own personal growth and that of your business.

I felt the same when dealing with my family and friends.  Being able to talk to people in your day-to-day life is also important when you have your own home business.  Naturally these individuals do not necessarily have to share your passion, however it would be ideal if they support your goals.  Having a home business requires a lot of time and energy on your part.  You will benefit greatly if the people closest to you are willing to serve as sounding boards for your ideas as well as the frustrations that go hand-in-hand with being a business owner.  It is important for you to remember that just as you benefit from their support they also need someone to share their daily events with, therefore you must try to reciprocate the support.

In addition to surrounding yourself with a support team, it helps to have a mentor as well.  Look for people in the industry who already have a successful home health business and emulate their strategies and behavior.  Again the Internet will serve as a great tool in this search, helping you find others in the industry who have already gone through the start-up phase and have not only survived but established a profitable business.  You do not have to limit yourself to one mentor or a virtual role model; in fact you should also join community groups or organizations in your niche, increasing the odds of meeting individuals who can offer advise and guidance on your journey.
